Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - With the hopes of a postseason berth erased, the Sabres returned to Smith Field on Wednesday evening to host Lakeland College. Wednesday also marked Senior Night for the Class of 2014 who were recognized at halftime. Four Sabres would combine for five goals as Marian cruised to a 5-1 victory.
Playing in his last game at Smith Field, senior Nate Peltonen opened the scoring in the 3' with a chip from the top of the 18. In a quick developing play, Peltonen received the pass from Jacob Dorsey and with only the keeper to beat, sent it up and over for the first goal of the game. But before the fans could return to their seats, Farouk Dadzie equalized just 19 seconds later, catching Bryce Woldt in no-man's-land near the top of the 18.
The two sides would play at equal measures for the next 18 minutes before sophomore Ramon Sutherland collected a blocked shot attempt from Peltonen to put Marian back in front. The goal was Sutherland's first of the season.
Before the end of the half, freshman Nick Venturini carved his name into the scoresheet with a beauty of a goal. From midfield, Sutherland sent a looping pass up and over the Muskie backline. Venturini chested it to his feet and waited for goalkeeper Austin Ganzke to make the first move, and when he did, slotted it home for his first tally of the year.
At halftime, Head Coach Craig Peltonen recognized the Class of 2014 and thanked them for their contributions to the Marian Soccer program. Playing in their final game at Smith Field was Michael Ekstrom, Nate Peltonen, Jacob Dorsey, and David Reinke.
With the lead in hand, the Sabres returned to play in the second and were rudely welcomed with a flurry of offensive attack from Lakeland. A number of close chances nearly knotted the match back up at two, but instead, the Sabres held on to their two goal lead.
In the 61', Peltonen returned to the scoresheet, notching his second of the night and sixth of the year. With everything favoring Marian, senior David Reinke added one final tally for good measure in the 83' for his 12th of the year.
The five goal outburst matches the result from September 13, a match in which Marian defeated Buena Vista, 5-2.
The Sabres will travel to Lisle, Illinois on Saturday to complete their conference schedule against Benedictine. Despite being eliminated from postseason play, they can continue to build on Wednesday night's success.
Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
