Sabres Unable to Overcome Second Period Deficit to CUW

Box Score

MEQUON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - The hunt for Marian's first win over Concordia Wis. in program history would fall short on Thursday, Nov. 21, but not without a fight. The difference would be a three goal second period for the Falcons that Marian just couldn't recover from, as they fell 5-2.

Just minutes into the first period, Veronika Metanova got Concordia Wis. on the board, catching junior Amanda Alexander off guard with a shot from inside the blue line. Marian would keep their composure however and shortly afterwards, junior Kristin Skubic got the Sabres on the board on a bizarre deflection. Skubic took her shot from the slot and had it deflected. The puck took a funny bounce on its return to the ice, and found its way into the back of the net.

The two teams would trade opportunities over the rest of the period, but it would be the Falcons who would capitalize at 12:30 of the first, to take the 2-1 lead into the locker room.

With such a closely contested opening frame, it was expected that the second would provide much of the same. However, the Falcons would rattle off three straight goals to take a commanding 5-1 lead.

"I thought we came out flat-footed tonight and Concordia took advantage of our mistakes and capitalized," Head Coach Jamie Kivi said. "We're a young team  and we need to learn from a game like this."

Trailing by four, the fight in the Sabres failed to subside, as freshman Sarah Bier scored her first collegiate goal at 11:43 of the third to cut the Concordia Wis. lead to three. That would be as close as Marian could make it, as they fell 5-2. Sophomore Ali Glazer made a number of clutch saves to limit the Falcons scoring chances. She would finish with 14 saves.

Marian will have the weekend off to recoup before heading to St. Paul, Minn. next week to play a non-conference series against Hamline University. That game will be available for viewing through Hamline's athletic website.
