Women's Hockey Drops a Heartbreaker to Hamline

Box Score

ST. PAUL, Minn. (SabreAthletics.com) - Many times a team that can score early and put their opponent in a deficit will come out on top. Unfortunately for the Sabres, Friday night would follow a different storyline as Marian fell 3-2 to Hamline.

Showing no signs of a Thanksgiving hangover, the Sabres jumped on the Pipers early, scoring two goals in the first period. Sophomore Nina Laurie tallied an unassisted goal at 10:12, only to be joined on the scoresheet by junior Amanda Waigand at 14:48. Laurie would collect the assist on Waigand's goal.

Before the opening frame would be completed, Hamline came back for two goals of their own. Jordan Verleye scored once at even strength and once on the powerplay to send the teams to the locker room tied at two.

After Hamline's goal at the 19:00 mark of the first period, neither team would gain an advantage until 19:34 of the third period.

Jess Hunt stole the spotlight with 26 seconds left to push the Pipers out ahead and take the 3-2 victory.

Sophomore Ali Glazer kept the Sabres close all night, turning away 26 of the 29 shots she faced.

Marian will complete the two-game series on Saturday afternoon, with puck drop set for 2 p.m.
