Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Behind 21 points from senior Sarah Albert and an unselfish brand of basketball, the Marian University women's basketball team defeated Dominican University, 78-63, in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener inside Sadoff Gymnasium, this afternoon, Nov. 30.
Albert registered 14 of her game-high 21 points in the first half to stake the Sabres to a 13-point halftime lead. Her teammates provided the support with 19 points from Sarah Olewinski, who went 6-for-8 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three. Dani Huray added 15 points as well, while pulling down six boards and dishing out six assists. The Sabres recorded 18 assists on 28 field goals for the game.
Marian improved to 1-4 overall, 1-0 in the NACC, while Dominican fell to 0-5 (0-1 NACC).
Midway through the first half, Albert knocked down a jumper from 10 feet to put the Sabres ahead 17-16 and they never looked back. Marian went on to outscore the Stars by 15 points in the final 12 minutes, taking a 42-29 lead into halftime. With time winding down in the first half, freshman Michelle Koster found Olewinski, who hit a clutch three as time expired.
The Sabres built off the momentum to lead by as many as 19 points in the second half. Huray was able to work her way inside for countless layup attempts and tallied 10 of her 15 points in the second half, playing all but one minute in the final 20.
Freshman Emma Jarvey added seven points, five assists and four rebounds in an all-around effort, while freshman Jessica Roberts chipped in seven points and six rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench.
The Sabres committed a season-low seven turnovers in the victory, while converting 16 points off 14 Dominican miscues. The Sabres also held a 38-32 advantage in points in the paint.
Dominican's Kaylee Paciora and Alyssa Hernandez led four scorers in double figures with 14 points apiece. Katie Budz registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists, while adding six rebounds to fall just shy of a triple-double.
Marian will return to action this Wednesday, Dec. 4, playing host to MSOE in a 7 p.m. tip-off.
