Box Score MADISON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's volleyball team tried its best to dig out of a 2-0 deficit, but top-seeded Edgewood College proved too tough to overcome on its home court in first round Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference tournament action, prevailing in four sets (25-11, 25-8, 15-25, 25-17) inside the Todd Wehr Edgedome, this evening, Nov. 5.
Edgewood displayed why they were the top seed that went through the conference regular season undefeated, cruising to wins in the first two sets. However, the Eagles stumbled in the third set as Marian capitalized with a convincing, 25-15, set win before Edgewood finished with a vengeance to clinch the win in the fourth set.
Edgewood improved to 25-7 overall to advance to the NACC quarterfinals, while Marian fell to 9-21 to conclude its season.
Sophomore Casey Lamberty and freshman Morgan Dercks each posted a double-double in the season finale. Lamberty tied for the team-lead with Anna Smit with 10 kills, while adding a team-high 12 digs. Dercks dished out 23 assists and chipped in 10 digs.
After taking the first set, the Eagles flexed their muscles in the form of a .542 hitting percentage. Edgewood hammered 13 kills on 24 attempts without a single error. Jessica Martin posted a match-high 12 kills on 27 attempts, while Katie Wedvick and Elizabeth Evans put down nine apiece.
Down, but not out, the Sabres bounced back with an impressive third set. Smit registered four kills alone, while Lamberty added three. The front row was on a roll as well, tallying all six blocks recorded in the match. Senior Katlin Jarvis ended her Sabre career on a great note with five block assists in the third set. Senior Ashley Zumbrock wrapped up her career with seven digs in her final match as a Sabre.
Edgewood will advance on to the NACC Semifinals Thursday.
