Sabres Fall in Regular Season Finale

Box Score

MEQUON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's hockey team closed out the 2012-13 regular season with a 6-3 loss to host Concordia University Wisconsin, inside the Ozaukee Ice Center, this evening, Feb. 16.

Twenty-four hours after an emotional senior day win in Fond du Lac, the Sabres saw their five-game winning streak come to an end as an inspired Falcon squad sent their seniors out with a win. However, it was freshman Chris Hughes that stole the spotlight with two goals. The Sabres cut a 6-0 deficit in half with three goals in less than three minutes in the third period, but it wasn't enough.

Concordia snapped a nine-game skid to finish its season 7-18 overall, 7-13 in the MCHA with the win. Meanwhile, the Sabres dropped to 13-11-1 (12-8 MCHA) with the loss, but had already secured the second overall seed and a first-round bye into the Harris Cup Four, March 1.

Hughes got the scoring started by putting the Falcons ahead at the 10:14 mark in the first period. Brandon Bayer followed up with a score 2:33 later and CUW took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

They would pour it on from there with three more goals in the second period, including Hughes' second of the game and sixth of the season.

After another Falcon goal made it 6-0 early in the third period, the Marian offense finally came to life.

Jake Bruhn scored his first career goal at the 5:29 mark on assists by Kyle L'Arrivee and Andy Kuechler. Brendan Roberts then made it two goals in as many days just 39 seconds later. Tyler Klein and Brett Campbell were credited with assists.

That at the 8:10 mark, Matt Berger scored his third goal of the season on Aaron Leonard's team-leading 12th assist of the season.

The Sabres were unable to cut into the deficit anymore as the game ended 6-3.

Marian will face the winner of Lawrence and Northland, which will play a two-game series next weekend, at the Harris Cup Four hosted by top-seeded Adrian College in Adrian, Mich., Friday, March 1.
