Saints March to a Sweep Over Sabres

Box Score

DULUTH, Minn. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's team ended the season with a 4-2 loss as they wrapped up the two-game series with St. Scholastica this afternoon, Feb. 16 in Mars Lakeview Arena.

The Saints scored three goals in the second period within one minute of each other to take a dominating 3-0 lead before Brittany Syms and the Sabres answered back with a goal of their own. The Sabres cut the lead to just one goal in the third period, trailing 3-2, but the Saints extended their lead with a power-play goal to go  up 4-2.

St. Scholastica improved to 12-9-4 overall and 9-8-3 in NCHA play with the win, while Marian finished 3-20-2 (2-16-2 NCHA) with the loss.

Both teams fought an even battle in the first period as both goalies prevented anyone from scoring. St. Scholastica tested Amanda Alexander 13 times to Teraysa White's 10. Both teams had an opportunity to score early as both were granted power-play opportunities, but neither could cash in a goal.

In the second period, the wheels fell of for the Sabres all within a single minutes time. Gina Dodge got the Saints on the scoreboard first with a power-play goal at the 16:31 mark. Within the next 31 seconds, the Saints added two more goals to extend their lead, 3-0.

Brittany Syms, assisted by Rachel Mullendore and Amanda Waigand, got the Sabres on board at the 12:06 mark, scoring her seventh goal on the season. The Sabres dropped the deficit to just one goal when Waigand found the back of the net with a short-handed goal at the 9:44 mark.

Again with the man advantage, Saints' Gina Dodge scored her second power-play goal on the afternoon to put the lead back up to two goals. The Saints ended the afternoon going 2-for-5 on power plays while Marian went 0-for-3.

Marian will continue to build it's woman's hockey program as it is still in it's infancy stage, but will be without Katie Lindsley, Kiley O'Connell, Rachel Mullendore, Megan Sesing-Gomoll and Devan Lesch. The five seniors combined for over a quarter of Marian's points this season.
