Softball Settles for DH Split at Lakeland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The offense was a alive and well for the Marian University softball team on the way to a doubleheader split against host Lakeland College, at Muskie Field, this evening, April 25. The Sabres were game one victors by a score of 7-4 before falling 9-7 in game two.

Marian's Amber Johnson turned in a 2-for-4 effort, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning that gave her team a 3-1 lead, one in which it would not relinquish in game one. Johnson added three more hits in game two to finish the day 5-for-8, but it wasn't enough to overcome six unanswered runs by the Muskies as the Sabres lost by two.

Marian moved to 10-20 overall, 8-10 in the Northern Athletics Conference, while Lakeland moved to 12-18 (8-9 NAC).

In game one, with the score tied at 1-1 in the fourth inning, Johnson stepped to the plate and crushed a Henk pitch over the center field fence, scoring Gabby D'Oronzo who reached on an error, to make it 3-1 Sabres.

Marian went on to score in each of the next three innings to add some much-needed insurance amidst a comeback attempt from the Muskies.

Trailing 6-1, Lakeland scored three runs in the sixth, highlighted by a Haeflinger two-run triple to left center to make it 6-4.

Another Johnson run-scoring hit made it 7-4 in the top of the seventh and Emily Gorges shut down the Muskies in the bottom of the inning to secure her eighth win of the year.

In game two, the Sabres used a seven-run second inning to answer a three-run first for the Muskies. Emilie Jansen highlighted the outburst with a bases-clearing triple to left field, her second such hit in as many days.

She finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored as well.

The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Muskies scored six runs over the next three innings. The Marian lead was cut to 7-5 when error with two outs allowed Hough to score in the third.

In the fourth, another unearned run crossed the plate due to another Sabre miscue. Three runners would touch home in all in the frame as Lakeland regained the lead, 8-7.

The Muskies would add an insurance run in the fifth to take a 9-7 advantage and the Sabre offense wasn't able to overcome Henk in the circle. The Lakeland pitcher, who came on in relief in the big second inning for the Sabres, did not allow a run en route to her fifth win of the year.

Gorges came on in relief as well and suffered the loss, falling to 8-14 on the season.

The Sabres will be back in action Saturday, April 27, to take on Benedictine on the road in Lisle, Ill. First pitch is slated for noon.
