FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – It was a back-and-forth battle turned stale mate as the Marian University men's soccer team played visiting non-conference foe, St. Norbert College, to a 2-2 draw at Smith Field, this afternoon, Sept. 15.
Both teams combined to score all four goals in the first half before defenses tightened up in the second half and overtime to preserve the draw. Nate Peltonen cracked the scoring column in the fifth minute and Danny Heerhold tied the game shortly before halftime in the 39th minute to make it 2-2 at the break.
Junior goalkeeper Bryce Woldt made 10 saves in a solid effort in net. St. Norbert held a 24-12 shots advantage, including 12-6 on goal.
Marian moved to 2-1-1 overall, while St. Norbert moved to 1-3-1.
It was the Peltonen connection early on that led to the first goal of the game when sophomore Zach found senior Nate just inside the top of the 18-yard box. Nate then fired a low laser inside the left post to give the Sabres a quick advantage.
Just eight minutes later, the Green Knights were able to find the equalizer when Joe Fabich sprinted down the right side and beat Woldt near post.
In the 29th minute, Patrick Hehir capitalized on a corner kick try by corralling the ball in traffic and hammering it home for the 2-1 lead.
With not much going in the way of offensive momentum in the first half following the first Sabre goal, Danny Heerhold changed that by tying the game in the 39th minute, sneaking a shot past Scott Faul inside the left post.
The Sabres and Green Knights had opportunities in the second half and both overtimes, but weren't able to convert. Marian senior forward David Reinke, who was coming off a four-goal game against Buena Vista last time out, had a couple near scoring chances that he wasn't able to put away in the second half.
Both teams were forced to settle for the 2-2 draw in their first meeting since 1994. It was the first draw of the season for the Sabres after recording a school-record total of six in 2012.
Marian will hit the road for a midweek tilt against Beloit College, Sept. 18, at 4:30 p.m. before returning home Saturday, Sept. 21, to host MSOE in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference home opener at noon.
