Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's soccer team dropped its Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference opener to visiting MSOE, 4-0, at Smith Field, this afternoon, Sept. 21.
The Sabres got off to a slow start in as the Raiders tallied three goals in the first 8:24 of the match to take a commanding lead. Marian was able to get just two shots off in the second half, while MSOE tacked on one more for insurance en route to the shutout.
MSOE improved to 4-1-3 overall, 1-0 in the NACC, while Marian fell to 3-2-1 (0-1 NACC).
In the fifth minute, the Raiders drew first blood when leading scorer Logan Andryk found the net on a short cross from teammate Andy Swiecichowski. Andryk's blast was placed accurately inside the far left post.
A minute-and-a-half later, Henry Nuckles made it 2-0 after gathering a loose ball and depositing a shot on a broken play. Less than three minutes later, MSOE made it a quick 3-0 advantage when Andryk served his corner kick to the head of Drew Porter.
The Sabres struggled to find an answer and challenged a trio of Raider goalkeepers just twice on the day, both shots coming off the foot of David Reinke.
For good measure, Patrick Gathof tallied one more goal off an Andryk assist in the 64th minute to make it 4-0.
Andryk, an All-American in 2012, totaled four points on the day to lead the Raiders to a league opening win.
Meanwhile, the Sabres will look to rebound when they travel to Edgewood College (4-2-1, 1-0 NACC) Wednesday, Sept. 25. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Breese Stevens Field in Madison.
