Sabres Nipped at Edgewood, 2-1

Box Score

MADISON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's soccer team cut a two-goal deficit in half late in the second half, but wasn't able to climb all the way back against a difficult opponent in Edgewood College on the road, eventually falling to the Eagles, 2-1, at Breese Stevens Field, this evening, Sept. 24.

Marian led in all major statistical categories, except for one. The Sabres outshot the Eagles, 12-9, including 6-5 in shots on goal. They also garnered two more corner kicks than their counterparts, but an 8:31 stretch to open up the second half spelled doom as two Edgewood goals proved to be the difference.

Edgewood improved to 5-2-1 overall, 2-0 in the NACC with the win, while Marian fell by a single goal for the fourth time already this season, dropping to 1-6 (0-2 NACC).

After 45 minutes, both teams went into halftime scoreless, but it wouldn't remain that way for very long.

Just 23 seconds into the second half, Jenna Mineau converted a penalty kick for her third goal of the season to give Edgewood a 1-0 lead.

About eight minutes later, Katie Pampuch found the net for the first time this year and gave the Eagles an insurmountable lead.

Marian fought back and cut the deficit in half in the 81st minute when Laura Maly connected from 35 yards out for her first goal of the season, but the Sabres weren't able to muster another scoring chance down the stretch.

Marian will be back in action this Saturday, Sept. 28, when it takes on Dominican University in a Homecoming Day match-up at Smith Field. Kickoff is slated for 2:30 p.m. The 2013 Hall of Fame Class will be announced during halftime.
