Box Score MADISON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - With last Saturday's 4-nil defeat in the rearview mirror, the Sabres looked to get into the win column Wednesday night as they faced Edgewood College. Marian fell behind early, conceding two goals in the opening 20 minutes. They would get one back late, but it would not prove to be enough as they fell 2-1.
The Eagles jumped on the board in the third minute, capitalizing on a failed clearing attempt from the Sabres. Alexander Ribeiro sent a short cross over to the foot of Stephen Gilbert who tallied for the third time in 2013. Sixteen minutes later, it would be Andrew Aurit scoring his second goal of the year after receiving a low cross and beat Marian goalkeeper Bryce Woldt to the right post.
Despite early deficit, Marian failed to give up hope, clawing their way back in the second half. The Sabres ripped 14 shots in the second half, more than quadrupling their first half total of three. Edgewood's Chad Stivers was up to the task, stopping two of the three shots on target. His lone mistake came at the foot of senior David Reinke.
In the 81', Reinke found the loose ball just outside of the six and banged home his ninth goal of the year. With the remaining nine minutes, Marian would be on full press, but would be unable to find the equalizer.
The loss moves the Sabres to 3-3-1 on the year and 0-2 in the NACC. Edgewood remains undefeated in the NACC, standing at 2-0.
Marian returns to Smith Field this Saturday as they will take on Dominican in a Homecoming Day match-up. Kickoff is set for noon.
