Late Tally from Dominican Brings Them Victory Over the Sabres

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's soccer team looked to knock off visiting Dominican University for the first time in 17 meetings, but the seven-time defending Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference champions found a late goal and spoiled the Sabres' Homecoming festivities on the way to a 1-0 win at Smith Field, this afternoon, Sept. 28.

Enzo Berrini netted the decisive goal in the 77th minute after countless efforts were denied by a stingy Marian defense this afternoon. The Sabre backline worked hard to cover each other's backs, but it would be Berrini's tally that would break scoreless tie and bring Dominican to victory.

From the opening whistle, the Marian defense was strong in their play and ruthless in their clearing ability. Marian denied Dominican second-chance opportunities and the first half ended the same as it started with the score knotted up at 0-0.

Midway through the opening half, Reinke broke away from his defender and came away with a 1v1 opportunity, but Dominican goalkeeper Gabriel Gongora made an aggressive play and was able to come up with the save. The Sabres would see similar chances the rest of the day, but this would prove to be their best opportunity.

Junior goalkeeper Bryce Woldt was strong in net once again, denying two powerful shots from Dominican early on in the second half. Both shots from within the penalty area very easily could have gone for goal.

In the 77th minute, Dominican's Enzo Berrini took a Ryan Ybarra cross just wide left of the six-yard box and sent a floating blast into the upper right corner of the goal.

On a shot that appeared to catch Woldt by surprise, it got up in the air and just carried into the top corner of the net.

With the loss, Marian drops to 0-3 in the NACC and 3-4-1 overall. They will return to action next Tuesday as they host Wisconsin Lutheran. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
