FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University volleyball team suffered its first loss of the 2013 campaign as Ripon College spoiled the Sabres' home opener inside Sadoff Gymnasium in four sets, this evening, Sept. 4.
The Red Hawks came out with a head of steam to start the match, taking the first set, 25-20. Despite a much-stronger effort in the second set that saw the Sabres even the match, Ripon rebounded to stave off any sort of comeback, taking the final two sets somewhat convincingly.
Ripon improved to 2-3 with the win, while Marian dropped to 4-1.
The Sabres trailed for the majority of the first set as Ripon hit .343 as a team on the way to a 25-20 triumph. Allison Barnes led the way with seven kills on 12 total attacks.
In the second set, Marian reappeared as the 4-0 team it entered as. The Sabres used a nine-point rally early in the set, while tallying, led by Catelyn Brehm, who recorded three total, one solo. She added four kills on five attacks as well as Marian went on to take the set, 25-18.
The third and fourth sets belonged to the Red Hawks. Karlye Wehner totaled 10 kills in the final two sets and finished the match with 16. Barnes led all attackers with 17 kills on 33 attacks.
The Sabres were led by Casey Lamberty's 12 kills, while Anna Smit added 11. Morgan Dercks finished with 23 assists and Katrina Jansen recorded 18 digs.
The Sabres will head to the North Park Invitational this weekend as they look to rebound from tonight's loss. They will take on the likes of St. Mary's (Minn.) and Denison on Friday followed by Aurora and North Park on Saturday.
