FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – David Reinke netted two goals, including a penalty in overtime to break a 1-1 tie and give the Marian University men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over visiting Lawrence University in a non-conference match at Smith Field, this evening, Sept. 8.
Reinke erased a one goal deficit with his first goal of the game in the 52nd minute, then gave the Sabres a golden goal win on a penalty shot with 4:55 remaining in the first overtime. It was Reinke's third goal of the season and gave Marian its first taste of victory in 2013.
"It feels great to get an overtime win," Head Coach Craig Peltonen said. "We had seven overtime games last year, including six ties, and a great team effort led to the win tonight."
Marian improved to 1-1 on the year with the win, while Lawrence dropped to 1-2-1 with the loss.
In the 36th minute, Lawrence's Michael Deremo scored his first goal of the season on an assist from Erik Soderlund to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead going into halftime.
Just over six minutes into the second half, Danny Heerhold slipped a through pass into the box and Reinke was able to beat the Viking keeper, Joe Krivit, inside the left post.
Neither team scored in the final 38 minutes of regulation, but there was a battle between both teams being played in the middle of the field.
"Often times, I think a team wins or loses based on who wins the battle at midfield," Peltonen added. "I thought it was a good battle tonight, but we held the edge."
With just over five minutes to go in the first overtime, it was at midfield where Michael Ekstrom played a free kick to begin the decisive run Marian was looking for.
Ramon Sutherland settled the kick and delivered an accurate pass inside the penalty area. It was there where Reinke was taken down, forcing the referee to award the penalty kick.
Reinke was tied for the team-lead with three shots and the Sabres got the win despite being outshot 14-12 in the match. Lawrence created some great chances as evidenced by a 9-2 lead in corner kicks.
The Sabres exact revenge on the Vikings following a 2-1 loss in last year's meeting and now lead the all-time series 9-4-1.
Marian will be back in action this Friday, Sept. 13, to take on Buena Vista in a 7 p.m. start at Smith Field.
