ST. CLOUD, Minn. (SabreAthletics.com) - For the second time in as many nights, the Marian men's hockey team needed overtime. Last night, the Sabres and Cobbers of Concordia-Moorhead were unable to break the scoreless tie, but Saturday night would bring a different result. A power-play goal in overtime by St. John's handed them the 2-1 victory.
The line of senior Tyler Klein, and juniors Ben Morgan and Rjay Berra would prove to be effective for Head Coach AJ Aitken, as the trio wasted no time getting the Sabres on the board. Just over a minute into the first period, Morgan collected his sixth assist of the season, setting up Klein for his ninth goal.
Failing to waiver, the Johnnies responded just five minutes later with a goal of their own. John Haeg notched his second goal of the year on assists from Dave Mylrea and Josh Gross.
Both teams would scavenge their way through the rest of regulation without surrendering a goal, sending the Sabres to overtime for the second straight night.
A minute and a half into overtime, senior Matt Berger was whistled for tripping, giving the Johnnies the man advantage. It would take only 16 seconds before St. John's capitalized on the man-advantage, giving them the 2-1 win.
The Sabres will play a home-and-home series with Lake Forest next Saturday and Sunday. The Foresters will come to Fond du Lac on Sunday, with puck drop scheduled for 4 p.m.
