Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Shooting woes continued as the Marian University women's basketball team squandered a one-point halftime lead and fell to visiting Rockford University, 67-58, inside Sadoff Gymnasium, this evening, Jan. 11.
The Sabres (3-11, 3-6 NACC) dropped its fifth straight Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game and sixth game overall after a 25.4 percent shooting performance. A team that, just four games ago, led the league in field goal percentage in conference play has suddenly hit a streak of bad luck after going just 16-for-63 (25.4 percent) from the field.
Marian's Sarah Albert led all scorers with 18 points on 4-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-12 from three-point range, which rates uncharacteristic for the 2012 NCAA three-point percentage champion. Sarah Olewinski chipped in 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting, while Dani Huray turned in an all-around effort with four points, a game-high 13 rebounds and six assists.
Rockford (7-7, 4-5 NACC) put together a solid second half, going 12-for-30 (40 percent) from the field to outscore its counterpart by 10 points en route to the victory. The Regents outscored the Sabres 8-0 in fast-break points and 32-13 in bench scoring, led by Arielle Nichols' 14 points and five rebounds. Erin Ryczek poured in a game-high 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting., while Lindsay Lengjak chipped in 13 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double.
Trailing by four in the first half, the Sabres stormed back to take a one-point halftime lead after Amelia Mirsberger rattled off eight of Marian's nine points down the stretch. The junior buried two three-pointers and laid in another bucket off a spin move in the lane to give the Sabres a 28-27 lead at the break. She finished the contest with 10 points on 3-for-7 from the field, including 2-for-6 from downtown.
Rockford came out of the break with a vengeance, putting together an 11-3 run to take a seven-point lead at the 15:42 mark. The advantage grew to as many as 14 after a Lengjak layup gave the Regents a 57-43 lead with 6:39 remaining.
Marian didn't give in, though, as it put together a quick 8-0 run to get back into the game. Olewinski was responsible for four straight points, followed by layups from Emma Jarvey and Jessica Roberts to make it 57-51 with 3:43 left.
The Sabres forced another turnover, but gave it right back and the Regents ensued with a 9-4 run to increase the lead back to double digits.
Marian will now embark on a three-game road trip, beginning with a midweek trip to Aurora University (6-8, 5-4 NACC) Wednesday, Jan. 15. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
