Box Score LAKE FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) - For the second time in as many days, Lake Forest claimed victory over Marian in NCHA play on Saturday, Jan. 18. The Foresters used three unanswered goals in the second to ride to a 5-1 victory.
Hoping to have short memories after the previous night's 9-0 loss, the Sabres came out on Saturday looking to do the little things, beginning with the transitions out of their defensive zone. The first period saw a more balanced level of play, but with 5:04 remaining in the first, Marissa Weber gave Lake Forest their first lead of the night, coming through the offensive zone on a change and netting the no-look pass from Michelle Greeneway.
Despite being down at the first intermission, Marian saw the benefits of their improved play, putting them in a position to attack in the second. Freshman Rian Lennon tied the game at one just over two minutes into the second on the power-play. Junior Nina Laurie collected her seventh assist on the year, helping the Sabres to tie the game at one.
The deadlock would be shortlived, unfortunately, as Lake Forest jumped back on top with 13:01 on the clock. Weber tallied for the second time on the night and gave the Foresters a lead that they wouldn't surrender. Two back-to-back goals in 16 seconds at the end of the second period let increased the Lake Forest lead to three.
Allie Girard added the fifth goal of the day for Lake Forest less than two minutes into the third to seal the 5-1 victory.
Marian returns to the Blue Line next weekend as they will host St. Norbert. The Green Knights completed a sweep of Finlandia this weekend and are currently five points ahead of the Sabres in the NCHA standings.
Next weekend will also play host to the "Stick It To Cancer" event being co-promoted by the Marian Athletic Department, the Sport and Recreation Management program, and Agnesian Healthcare.
