Sabres Unable to Avoid Weekend Sweep

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - A definitive third period from Lake Forest was the difference in Sunday's NCHA showdown, as the Foresters completed the weekend sweep of Marian, winning 5-2 at the Blue Line.

Hoping to avoid a nine-game winless streak, the Sabres returned to their home barn on Sunday, Jan. 19 to host Lake Forest. In Saturday's contest, the Foresters stole the show in overtime on a goal from Anthony Annunziato. Sunday's game started almost identically as it did on Saturday, with Lake Forest getting on the board six minutes in. Leading scorer for Lake Forest Bobby Barrett grabbed the early lead for the Foresters, scoring at the 6:46 mark of the first, with teammates Luke Swardenski and Mike Violette earning the helpers.

Less than three minutes later, senior Ashton Reinboldt leveled things at one with his put-home rebound goal. A beauty of a saucer pass from senior Robbie Bailey glided to the blade of junior Aaron Leonard who ripped a shot into the pads of Leo Podolsky. The Lake Forest goaltender could not control the rebound and Reinboldt was rewarded for going hard to the net with his third goal of the season.

Before the opening frame was complete, however, Lake Forest regained the lead on Barrett's second goal of the night. Freshman goaltender Mike Baldwin was caught in a one-on-one with Barrett and just missed grabbing the wrister that went top-shelf.

Senior Tanner Burton would earn the only points of the second period, as he took a feed from junior Brian Berger in the slot and zinged his wristshot top-shelf on Podolsky.

Feeling confident with the 2-2 tie heading into the third, the Sabres were rudely greeted with three unanswered goals from Lake Forest. Jason McAloon grabbed the game-winner at the 8:35 mark of the third, before Violette added the insurance goal just 12 seconds later.

Fighting to stay alive, Head Coach AJ Aitken pulled Baldwin with two minutes remaining in favor of the extra attacker. Barrett would grab his third goal of the game with an empty-netter, sealing the weekend sweep for Lake Forest.

With MSOE's sweep of Lawrence this weekend, Marian stays in sixth place in the NCHA standings with seven points. However, Lawrence, MSOE, and Northland are all tied for seventh place with six points each. The Sabres will host Northland next weekend at home before playing a home-and-home with fourth-placed Concordia Wis.
