Marian Comes Up Short at MSOE

Box Score

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Senior Sarah Albert notched a game-high 18 points and the Marian University women's basketball team knocked down 10 three's, but it wasn't enough to upend Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference foe and host MSOE as the Raiders cruised to a 75-63 win inside the Kern Center, this evening, Jan. 21.

Albert, who leads the league in three-pointers made (42) and percentage (45.7) was responsible for a 5-for-6 effort from downtown tonight. Nicole Paulus added 11 points, while Amelia Mirsberger chipped in 10, but the Sabres (3-14, 3-9 NACC) shot just 34 percent (18-for-53) for the game. Meanwhile, the Raiders (11-6, 9-3 NACC) shot over 52 percent (28-of-53) from the field and were led by Shannon Larson's 18 points as she highlighted five MSOE players in double figures.

"We played the first 30 minutes with little execution and urgency," Head Coach Bill Peters said. "Then, we made a furious comeback with solid production off the bench, but it wasn't enough."

The Raiders gained momentum with a 6-0 run at the end of the first half to take a 40-27 lead into the break. A 16-5 run to start the second half broke things wide open and gave the hosts their largest lead of the game at 24 points, 56-32, with 13:01 remaining.

Trailing 68-49 with 3:25 left, the Sabres went on an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to just 10 points, but it left only 1:47 on the clock. MSOE would seal it up with free throws to close it out.

The Raiders used their size inside to take advantage of the Sabres as it needed just a 3-for-9 from the outside thanks to a dominating effort in the mid-range game. Starting forwards Larson and Holly Denfeld combined for 32 points on 12-of-24 shooting. Each added nine rebounds apiece, while combining for five assists, five steals and two blocks. The Raiders out-rebounded the Sabres 43-23 in the contest.

Marisa Gerstbrien chipped in 12 points, while Corrine Sanford and Margaret Pugh added 10 points each. Pugh also contributed eight rebounds and four assists.

MSOE secured its third straight victory and completed the season sweep over the Sabres with the win.

Marian will return home to face an Alverno College squad Saturday that is riding a four-game win streak and coming off a convincing, 75-33, win over Concordia Chicago at home tonight. Saturday's tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. inside Sadoff Gymnasium.
