Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - Hoping to improve from their performance a week ago, the Sabres hosted St. Norbert College on Friday, January 24 at the Blue Line in NCHA play. The Green Knights capitalized on two of their three power-plays to claim victory, 4-2.
The Sabres fell behind early on a goal from back-to-back goals by St. Norbert in the first and second periods. Taylor Giacin notched her second of the year in the first period to give St. Norbert the lead. Halfway through the second period, Henriette Ostergaard grabbed her eight goal of the season to put the Green Knights up by two.
At 14:01 of the second period, freshman defenseman Paige Picard scored her first collegiate goal on an assist from junior Nina Laurie. St. Norbert carried the one-goal lead into the locker room at the end of two.
An eventful third period was jumpstarted by Andrea Senne at 2:41 of the third period. She capitalized on the man-advantage for St. Norbert to increase their lead to two. Going on the power-play just minutes later, the Green Knights converted once again, this time on Ostergaard's second of the night.
Despite trailing by three, the Sabres put their nose to the grindstone in search of a goal. Marian would cut the lead to two on a power-play goal by freshman Jessie Meluch at 16:56. Senior Sophie Schieldt collected her fourth point of the season with the assist.
That would be as close as they could get, as St. Norbert closed out the remainder of the third period to win 4-2.
The two teams will return to the Blue Line on Saturday to complete the weekend series. Puck drops at 4:15 p.m.
