Sabres Squander Halftime Lead in Loss to Edgewood

Box Score

MADISON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Ten first-half three-pointers and a four-point halftime lead wasn't enough to send the Marian University women's basketball team to victory as host Edgewood College came from behind for a ten-point, 73-63, win inside the Todd Wehr Edgedome, Wednesday evening, Jan. 29.

The Sabres (4-15, 4-10 NACC) led by as many as eight points in the first half and took a halftime lead into the locker room after going 10-for-20 from three-point range. However, Marian went ice cold from beyond the arc in the second half with an 0-for-13 effort from downtown, which allowed the Eagles (9-10, 9-5 NACC) to storm back for the comeback win.

Mirsberger and Olewinski combined for 19 first-half points and finished with 14 and 11 points, respectively, for the Sabres. Mariah Hill tallied a game-high 17 points, while adding nine rebounds. Courtney Spangler added 16 points, 10 rebounds off the bench as well.

"It was a tale of two halves," Head Coach Bill Peters said. "We had good looks, but just didn't put it in the hole."

Peters also pointed to poor execution on the defensive end as Edgewood held the dominating, 36-14, edge in points in the paint. The Eagles controlled the glass, as well, using a 44-26 rebounding advantage and turned 16 offensive rebounds into 22 second-chance points.

In the first half, the Sabres went on a run where they made seven of nine three-point attempts to take a 25-18 lead with 10:51 left before halftime. Nicole Paulus would connect on a three with 4:09 left in the first half to give Marian its largest lead of the game at eight points, 37-29.

The Eagles maintained pace, however, and shrunk the deficit to just four before halftime.

In the second half, Edgewood stormed back, using an 8-0 run at the beginning of the period to take a two-point lead, one it would not relinquish. Hill tallied 13 points, while Chelsey Watkins added 10 in the second half alone. The Eagles doubled up the Sabres on the glass, 26-13, while hauling in 10 offensive rebounds take control of the game.

Sarah Albert led the Sabres with 15 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 1-of-5 from three and 6-for-6 from the foul line.

Marian will head to River Forest, Ill. to take on Dominican University (0-19, 0-14 NACC) this Saturday, Feb. 1. Tip is set for 4:15 p.m.
