Men's Soccer Upends Wisconsin Lutheran on the Road, 2-0

Box Score

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's soccer team picked up its first NACC victory of the season, defeating host Wisconsin Lutheran College on the road, tonight, Oct. 1, 2-0. Freshman Alonso Fragoso scored his fourth goal of the season early in the first half, which proved to be the eventual game-winner before Mohamud Abshir added an insurance tally late.

The Sabres (4-6, 1-3 NACC), needing a win in the worst way, got a very big road triumph over the Warriors (7-5, 1-2 NACC). Fragoso spotted Marian a 1-0 lead in the 13' off a free kick from 20 yards out.

From then on, the match became very physical as 6 cards were issued, including two red cards in an altercation about 19 minutes into the game. Shortly after giving the Sabres the lead, Fragoso, along with WLC's Austin Drake, got into an argument that the center referee warranted a disqualification.

With both players represented as their team's leading scorer, opportunities came few and far between following their exits.

Despite being turned aside time-after-time by Marian goalkeeper Bryce Woldt, the Warriors actually led the Sabres in shots, 20-7, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.

With 21 seconds remaining in regulation, Abshir made it 2-0. The freshman forced the keeper's hand, made a move to get by him, and found himself an empty net for his first goal of the season.

Junior midfielder Danny Heerhold didn't make the stat sheet for anything other than a shot on goal, but was constantly in the face of WLC attackers. The tri-captain stepped it up defensively to help Woldt preserve his first shutout of the year and third of his career.

Marian snapped a 2-game losing streak to WLC with the win and now leads the all-time series, 28-9-1.

The Sabres will be back in action to take on visiting Concordia University Chicago in a Homecoming Day match-up at Smith Field this Saturday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. following the women's game at noon.
