Box Score LISLE, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) -- Freshman Amber Baker helped guide the Marian University women's volleyball team past host Benedictine University for the first time since 1999 and first-ever victory inside the Rice Center, this evening, Oct. 10. The Sabres won for the third time in four outings, dispatching the Eagles in five sets.
Baker recorded her 14th double-double of the season with a season-high 47 assists to go along with 16 digs. Teammates Jessica Roberts and Kathryn Braunling took advantage of opportunities set up by Baker, finishing with 22 and 11 kills, respectively. Marian hit .160 as a team en route to its first win over Benedictine since 1999.
The Sabres (7-14, 3-2 NACC) found themselves tied at 16 in the first set, but a four-point rally was enough to quiet the Eagles (6-17, 4-2 NACC) to the tune of a 25-22 set win.
It was a tight second set that was taken into extra points, but Benedictine's Erin Wiegand was able to help tie the match for the Eagles. Wiegand was one-of-four Eagles with double-digit kills as both Emily Chitwood and Keriann Groen totaled 13.
The Sabres were able to take control in the third set, having a lead as high as nine and ultimately taking it 25-22. With a closer fourth set that was eventually tied at 22, the Eagles were able to go on a 3-1 run to force a fifth and final set.
Benedictine seemed to have control gaining an early 7-4 lead, but a 6-1 run helped the Sabres capture a 10-8 lead and ultimately the match.
Katrina Jansen registered a team-high 29 digs in the win, while Emily Drier fell one kill shy of a double-double, adding 16 digs on the night.
Marian jumps into a tie for fifth place in the league standings with the win and takes on third-place Aurora University (18-7, 4-1 NACC) tomorrow, Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. in Aurora, Ill.
