FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Four second-half goals propelled the Marian University women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over visiting Alverno College in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action at Smith Field, this evening, Oct. 22.

Center midfielder Brittany Syms scored twice, adding to her already stellar senior campaign and giving her 11 goals on the season. Fellow senior Laura Maly tallied two assists and moved into a sixth-place tie with Jenny Jacobson ('94) on the all-time scoring list at Marian. She now sits with 86 career points.

After a scoreless first half that saw the Sabres (8-7, 5-3 NACC) outshoot the Inferno (3-12-1, 1-7 NACC) 14-5 with out a goal to show for it, the offense made it a mission to put a crooked number on the scoreboard.

Syms started things off in the 52' by getting a foot on a corner service from Maly. Syms' right-footed the ball in mid-air and slid it inside the right post to make it 1-0, Sabres.

Maly then assisted on Mikaila Johnson's fourth goal of the year in the 65' on a cross to the top of the 18-yard box. Johnson put it inside the left post and Maly picked up her 10th assist of the season.

Just a little more than 3 minutes later, Gabby Solis got into the act with her first-career goal. She was able to gain position inside the 6-yard box and flick on a solid through ball from Molly Kovarik for Marian's third goal of the game.

Syms then made it bookend goals by notching the final tally in the 84' with a rebound of her own shot that was saved. The second effort gave her goal number 11 on the season as she continues to add to a career year.

The defense, playing in front of keepers Caitlyn Rosenberger and Alysha Kallas, pitched their fourth shutout of the season. Kovarik was able to get into the scoring column with an assist, representing the likes of Jaime Anderson, Kelly Kulinski and Nicole Rublee who also had opportunities to add points throughout the match. They combined for five shots in the win and, while making it very difficult for Alverno to attack, pushed forward and gave their own offensive players additional chances.

Marian outshot Alverno, 39-6, in the win, including a 23-4 edge in shots on goal.

The Sabres will be back in action this Saturday, Oct. 25, to host Benedictine University on Senior Day. Eight Marian seniors (Caitlyn Rosenberger, Kelly Kulinski, Maisie Floyd, Rhyah Jungwirth, Leisa Conn, Laura Maly Brittany Syms and Nicole Rublee) will be recognized at halftime of that contest set for noon at Smith Field.
