Sabre Clinch NACC Tourney Berth on Senior Day

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – It was a sweet Senior Day send-off for the Marian University women's soccer team as it defeated visiting Benedictine University, 3-0, in the regular season home finale and clinched a berth into the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference tournament with the win at Smith Field, this afternoon, Oct. 25.

Three seniors booked goals, led by Maisie Floyd, who tallied a goal and an assist. The Eden native put the Sabres on the board in the 8' with a strong pursuit of a rebound that she knocked in following a misplay by the goalkeeper. She then earned a second assist on the following goal as Marian cruised past Benedictine (4-13-1, 2-7 NACC) to the victory.

All eight seniors made the starting lineup, including goalkeeper Caitlyn Rosenberger, Kelly Kulinski, Rhyah Jungwirth, Leisa Conn, Laura Maly, Brittany Syms, Nicole Rublee and Floyd. All were honored in a special halftime ceremony.

The Sabres (9-7, 6-3 NACC) took a 2-0 lead into halftime thanks to Floyd and Syms, who tallied Marian's second goal in the 13'. Mikaila Johnson crossed a ball into the 6-yard box that was flicked on by Floyd and hammered home by Syms. It was her 12th goal of the season.

In the 77', Maly scored one of her patented goals that leave keepers feeling out of position. From 30 yards out, Maly left-footed one over the keeper's head and into the back of the net for her sixth goal of the year. With the tally, she moved into sole possession of sixth place on Marian's all-time scoring list with 88 career points.

Rosenberger earned her first shutout of the season and seventh of her career after making one save in the win.

An endearing gesture by the Sabres saw Jungwirth make her final start at Smith Field despite an injury that has forced her to miss the last several games. With the injury still lingering, she was quickly subbed out following the opening whistle and walked off to a standing ovation.

The Sabres, who have already clinched one of the six positions in the NACC tournament, will travel to Lakeland for the NACC regular season finale Tuesday, Oct. 28, followed by a non-conference road match-up at UW-Whitewater the following day to conclude the regular season.
