Third Straight Shutout Caps NACC Regular Season Play

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - The Marian University women's soccer team handed Lakeland College a 2-0 defeat for their third straight shutout and a victory in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference regular season finale at Lakeland Soccer Field, this afternoon, Oct. 28.

The Sabres (10-7, 7-3 NACC) rode a tough defensive effort once again, extending their streak without allowing a goal to 288 minutes. The Muskies (3-16-1, 0-10 NACC) struggled from the start, having only scored two goals in conference play heading into the match-up. Marian outshot Lakeland, 25-3, including 18-2 in shots on goal.

It was a quiet first half as each team was held scoreless despite Marian outshooting the Muskies 12-1 in the first 45 minutes. Senior defender, Kelly Kulinski, was able to finally connect for the Sabres in the 59' for her second goal of the season. The scoring opportunity came off a corner kick by Laura Maly that stayed in the attacking area long enough for Kulinski to finish the job.

With Marian controlling time of possession, the Muskies only got off two shots on goal in the second half. Caitlyn Rosenberger was dominant once again, saving both shots to register her 16th career shutout.

The Sabres gave Rosnberger some insurance in the 81' as junior Beth Merten scored her second goal of the year. It was Marian's leading scorer, Brittany Syms, who fed her the opportunity with the assist to make it 2-0.

Marian's win streak has solidified the fifth seed in the NACC tournament, which pits it against fourth-seeded Dominican in a match-up set for Saturday at noon in River Forest, Ill. The Stars came away with a 3-1 win against the Sabres at home in their only meeting of the season.

Tomorrow, Marian will wrap up the regular season with perhaps its toughest opponent of the season in 12th-ranked UW-Whitewater, according to NSCAA.com. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Fiskum Field.
