Box Score OSHKOSH, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's volleyball team concluded the regular season with a four-set defeat to host UW-Oshkosh inside the Kolf Sports Center, this evening, Oct. 28. The Sabres took the third set with a match-high .312 hitting percentage, but the Titans proved too tough to overcome in the end.
Sophomore Jessica Roberts led Marian with a match-high 18 kills on .405 hitting, while Amber Baker dished out 31 assists and Katrina Jansen notched 22 digs. The Sabres (10-18) hit a respectable .123 for the match, but it wasn't enough.
Both teams played a fairly even set in the first, hitting virtually the same .212 percentage. The Sabres led 10-8, but fell behind by the middle of the set when the Titans (27-6) rattled off four straight points to take a 12-10 advantage and never looked back on the way to a 25-19 set win.
UW-Oshkosh, which is receiving votes in the most recent AVCA Coaches' Poll, came out firing on all cylinders in the second set. The Titans scored the first five points before Marian was able to answer back. The Sabres chipped away, cutting the deficit to 15-14 before UWO called a timeout.
The pep talk must have proved effective as the Titans scored four straight points en route to a 25-17 set victory.
In the third set, Marian was its most efficient, evidenced by it jumping out to a 6-2 lead out of the gate. A UWO timeout proved to be effective once again as it followed up with a 6-0 run to take a two-point advantage before the Sabres fell back into a rhythm. Marian went on an 12-2 run to take a 20-12 lead before taking the set, 25-19.
A solid club, the Titans didn't waver, answering back in the fourth set with a convincing result. UWO steamrolled to a 22-8 advantage before holding the Sabres to just 12 points in the set.
The Titans used a balanced attack with four attackers totaling seven or more kills, led by Katelyn Malcheski's nine on .400 hitting. Lexi Thiel delivered 28 assists, while Mandy Trautmann recorded 28 digs.
The Sabres now turn their attention to round one of the Northern Athletics Conference tournament where they will take on third-seeded Edgewood in Madison. Start time is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4.
