Sabres Tripped Up by St. Scholastica in the Season Opener

Box Score

DULUTH, Minn. (SabreAthletics.com) - The 2014-15 regular season did not start out as the Marian University women's hockey team had hoped, falling 7-1 to their conference foes St. Scholastica, this evening, Oct. 31.

It was a quick start to the season for St. Scholastica's Nikki Logergren as she scored 54 seconds into the game off a pass from freshman Kaleigh Hamann. Logergren was just getting started as she picked up an assist two minutes later and scored her second goal of the period on a power play with four minutes remaining.

Scoring opportunities were a struggle for the Sabres, taking only seven shots in the first and 18 overall, which compared to nearly one-third the amount of St. Scholastica. The Sabres were unable to take much control offensively as St. Scholastica was dominant on the faceoff, winning 46 out of 73 opportunities.

Penalties hurt the Sabres again in the second period as Nina Waidacher scored the Saints' second power play goal six minutes in. With a healthy 4-0 lead, the Saints continued to have their way with the Sabre defense. Leading 5-0, the Saints tacked another one on when Waidacher scored her second goal of the game early in the third to put them up six.

Marian's Emily Everson was able to avoid the shutout for the Sabres, scoring an unassisted goal with almost nine minutes remaining.

After the Sabres cut the lead to five, the Saints added a late goal to put the difference back to six. Marian looks to find some answers overnight and comeback with a renewed intensity as they face the Saints once again in Duluth, tomorrow, at 2 p.m.
