Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Emmanuel Zepeda didn't just score his first career goal in a win over Concordia University Chicago, today, Oct. 4, but he did it with nine seconds left in double-overtime to give the Marian University men's soccer team a much-needed and thrilling three points in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference table.
Zepeda's goal came off a quick restart off a CUC foul with time winding down. The Sabres (5-6, 2-3 NACC) worked feverishly to get one last opportunity before time ran out.
Danny Heerhold, with the ball on the left side, found Zepeda alone in the middle of the 18-yard box. From there, the Cicero, Ill. native used a left boot to slip it under a diving Jorge Guzman for the game-winner.
Marian outshot CUC (4-4-2, 1-3-0 NACC), 20-17, but the Cougars held a 12-10 advantage in shots on goal.
Jeroham Duran had three shots on target for the Sabres and was able to put his in position for the opportunity to win it overtime after he tied the game at 2-2 in the 74'. It was the freshman's team-leading fifth goal of the season and came off a rebound as Guzman was forced to come out to save a shot from Sam Kusik.
Mohamud Abshir gave the Sabres the initial lead with his second goal of the year in the 14' when he cleaned up a rebound off a corner kick. Jesse Mejia was credited with the assist for the Sabres.
Then in the 30', the Cougars responded in the form of their leading scorer, DeAndre McLaurin, who snuck his seventh goal of the year inside the left post on a Brendan Mullane cross into the box.
The score would stay 1-1 into halftime, but CUC didn't take much time in the second half to put the pressure on when Daniel Krajewski served a corner and found the head of Ricardo Aragon for the go-ahead score less than two minutes into the second half.
That set up the exciting finish for the Sabres, who climbed into sixth place in the league standings. Marian will have an opportunity for three straight conference wins when it hosts Rockford (1-10-1, 0-4 NACC) next Saturday, Oct. 11.
But first, the Sabres will host UW-Oshkosh in a non-conference match-up Wednesday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Smith Field.
