Volleyball Prevails in 5 Over Inferno

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) -- The Marian University women's volleyball team outlasted visiting Alverno College, defeating the Inferno in five sets (25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-8) behind a career performance from Jessica Roberts, who tallied 26 kills inside Sadoff Gymnasium, this afternoon, Oct. 4.

The Sabres (6-13, 2-1 NACC) improved their record to above .500 in conference play and remained undefeated against the Inferno in 15 meetings all-time. Marian took the first set by three points, but Alverno returned the favor in the second set. The Sabres had the Inferno on the ropes in the fourth set with a chance to close it out, but they did not go away quietly, forcing a thrilling finish. The Blue and White made quick work of Alverno in the fifth set with a 15-8 win.

Roberts career day was highlighted by a .362 hitting percentage, leading the Sabres, who recorded a .231 hitting percentage as a team. Catelyn Brehm and Kathryn Braunling registered double-digit kill totals as well, while Amber Baker dished out 38 assists. Emily Drier led three Sabres in double figures with 27 digs.

Marian's hot start was evident by its .412 hitting percentage in the first set, totaling 16 kills against just two errors in 34 total attacks. Alverno held the Sabres under .200 hitting in the second set, while registering a .324 percentage itself en route to tying the match at one set apiece.

After taking the third set, 25-21, Marian appeared ready to close out the match in four sets. Leading 22-16 in the fourth set, the Sabres had all the momentum. But just then, things turned in favor of the Inferno. Alverno made a run and behind Emily Ortner's 23 kills, got back into the match with a 25-23 set win to force a decisive fifth set.

The Inferno hit .179 as a team and Ortner finished as the lone Alverno player in double figures. Meranda Masse handed out 30 assists, while Danielle Schilawski recorded 31 digs.

It was Alverno's defense that shined in the fourth set comeback, but it ran out of gas in the fifth. The Sabres stormed out to a 12-4 lead and never looked back.

Marian will hit the road for three straight matches in Illinois, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Dominican. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
