Sabres Fall at Top-Ranked Green Knights in Season Opener

Box Score

DE PERE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's hockey team faced an uphill battle from the start, witnessing host and top-ranked St. Norbert College raise its national championship banner prior to the start of the 2014-15 season opener before suffering a 5-2 rout inside Cornerstone Community Ice Center, this evening, Oct. 31.

Marian's sophomore Brodie Jamieson picked up his first goal of the season, which tied the game at 1-1 at the 12:24 mark in the first period. Early in the third, freshman Mark Whiteley scored his first collegiate goal to provide the final tally of the game.

St. Norbert (1-0-0, 1-0-0 NCHA) jumped out early, scoring at the 1:28 mark in the first period on Erik Cooper's wrist shot where he went top shelf.

The Sabres (0-1-0, 0-1-0 NCHA) didn't go quietly as Jamieson tied the game with a rebound off Brian Berger's shot with 7: 36 remaining in the first. About a minute and a half later, though, Tyler Zepeda put the Green Knights up 2-1 on a short-handed breakaway goal that caught a Marian D man out of position on the power play.

St. Norbert added another with 1:09 left in the period to go up 3-1.

Trailing 5-1 heading into the third period, Marian got a quick score from Whiteley on a well-executed power play possession, making it a three-goal game with 18:12 remaining in regulation.

Both teams had opportunities the rest of the way, but neither was able to find the back of the net.

St. Norbert outshot Marian, 20-8, in the final two periods and dominated the category 32-18 in the game. Each team was penalized five times for 10 minutes. The Sabres went 1-for-4 on the power play, while St. Norbert capitalized twice in five attempts.

Both teams will meet again tomorrow night with Marian playing host in its home opener at the Blue Line Family Ice Center in Fond du Lac. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
