Box Score RIVER FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – The fifth-seeded Marian University women's soccer team traveled down to fourth-seeded Dominican University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference first round tournament match-up, today, Nov. 1.
Both teams finished the regular season 7-3 in league play and the Stars captured home field advantage thanks to a win over the Sabres earlier in the year. That may have proven the difference today as Dominican swarmed Marian with three first-half goals en route to the 3-0 win, thus ending the Sabres' season.
Kelli Iovino spotted the Stars a 2-0 lead and Taylor Adler scored the third goal 14 seconds later to stake a lead that proved to be insurmountable by the Sabres after just 45 minutes of play.
It was a frustrating first half for Marian as it managed to outshoot Dominican 9-8 overall, including a 6-3 edge on target.
The first goal from Iovino came on a long restart service from Nathalie Mathis, who struck it perfectly into the box and onto the head of Iovino for the goal just 11:15 into the match.
The score would remain 1-0 until the 35th minute when Iovino tapped in a bouncing ball in front of the net.
And to make matters worse for the Sabres, a turnover allowed Leah Tednes to find Adler for a breakaway attempt that she converted just 14 seconds after Iovino made it 2-0.
Satisfied with a three-goal lead, the Stars played a defensive second half and the Sabres were unable to gain many opportunities, being outshot 12-5.
Mikaila Johnson registered five shots, including two on goal for the Sabres and was matched by Leisa Conn's two shots on goal.
Caitlyn Rosenberger made seven saves in her final appearance for the Blue and White, while six other seniors experienced a disappointing end to their Marian careers.
Dominican will now travel to top-seeded Aurora for a NACC semifinal match-up scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 4.
