MSOE Collects 3-1 Win Over Sabres in Series Opener

Box Score

MILWAUKEE (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's hockey team won the first period, but the host MSOE Raiders took the final two en route to a 3-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association win at the Kern Center, this evening, Nov. 14.

The Sabres (2-3, 2-3 NCHA) scored the lone goal of the first period to take an early 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but an onslaught of shots ensued on Marian freshman goalie Mike Gudmandson. The Raiders (1-4, 1-4 NCHA) were able to trickle two past him, which proved too much to overcome.

MSOE dominated in shots on goal, putting 43 shots on net in the win. Marian managed just 18 shots on net and Raider netminder Nick Kohn rose to the occasion, stopping 17 attempts on the way to a win.

Matt Williams helped the Sabres crack the scoring column first with a goal at the 13:03 mark in the first period. Assists were credited to Aaron Leonard and Scott Milnthorp.

Gudmandson made 13 first-period saves and MSOE kept the pressure on as the night went on.

In the second, the Sabres killed off a pair of penalties following MSOE's equalizer at the 9:06 mark. Patrick Dwyer was able to get one past Gumandson on assists by Eric Tien and Brent Wilcox.

Then at the 16:36 mark, Jerad Tafoya put the Raiders in front, 2-1, on a scrum in front of the net. Brent Wilcox and James Ring were credited with assists on the goal. The Raiders managed 19 shots in the second period and Gudmandson had stopped 30 after just 40 minutes of action.

At 4:50 of the third, Brian Berger took what seemed to be a costly 5-minute major, but MSOE was unable to get out of its own way, taking three penalties thereafter to give Marian a 4-on-3 power play with under 14 minutes remaining.

The Sabres could not capitalize and the Raiders went on to add an empty-net tally from Omar Mullen with 47 seconds remaining to take it, 3-1.

Both teams will be back at it tomorrow night, Nov. 15, from the Blue Line Family Ice Center in Fond du Lac. It will be "Military Appreciation Night" and the Sabres will wear special uniforms to pay tribute to our nation's veterans. Puck drops at 7 p.m. Live video and stats will be provided via Stretch Internet.
