Marian's Three-Game Win Streak Snapped at Stevens Point

Box Score

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - The Marian University women's hockey team was in search of their fourth straight win against a challenging UW-Stevens Point squad in a non-conference match up, tonight, Nov 25. The Pointers (6-2) out shot the Sabres 48-18 and scored three times while shutting out the Sabre offense to snap the streak and drop them to 3-5 on the season.

It was not an easy task for the Sabres as UW-Stevens Point came in at second place in the WIAC, with losses from an undefeated UW-River Falls and UW-Superior. The Sabres were a tough battle, making the Pointers work for their goals, but with a limited amount of offensive opportunities the Sabres were never able to find an answer.

After Amanda Alexander stopped the first 14 shots to start the game, it was the last shot of the first period that got the Pointers on the board. Junior Rachel Reynard connected for her third goal of the season with the help from teammates Megan Menotti and Meredith Ingbretson to put the Pointers on top 1-0.

Just over a minute into the second period it was Reynerd who got called for checking to give the Sabres a power play opportunity. With hopes of tying the game up, things took a turn for the worse when Hannah Smith took the puck the other way to score a short-handed goal to put the Pointers up two.

Stevens Point had their own power play chance just four minutes later on a holding call from Piage Johnson. With just second remaining in the power play, Betsy Anderson and Nicole Schaub setup teammate Emily Lester who finished the job to give the Pointers a three goal lead.

The Sabres were held to just five shots on goal in the third period to erase the chance of a comeback. A week off for Thanksgiving gives the Sabres time to rest and prepare for a big conference matchup against third place Lake Forest on Dec. 3. The Puck drops at 7 p.m.
