FOND DU LAC, Wisconsin (SabreAthletics.com) – RJay Berra registered two goals and an assist while Brodie Jamieson added a goal and two assists as the Marian University men's hockey team turned in a convincing 5-2 victory over visiting UW-Superior inside the Blue Line Family Ice Center, this evening, Dec. 12.
The Sabres (6-6) evened its record on the season heading into the first-half finale against nationally-ranked UW-Stevens Point at the Blue Line tomorrow.
Marian jumped on the Yellow Jackets (5-7) from the opening puck drop as Jacob Ryd found the back of the net for his second goal of the season just 38 seconds into the game on assists from Brian Berger and Ben Morgan. It was a great sign for a struggling team looking to bounce back from a disappointing weekend at Adrian the week before.
Midway through the first period, the 'Jackets got one back to tie the game on Anton Svensson's goal with 10:03 remaining in the period.
But Jamieson and Berra would answer back in the final 5:33, each scoring their third goals of the season to spot the Sabres a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
At the 10:01 mark of the second period, Derek Thorogood recorded his fifth goal of the year on an assist from Derek Perl to make it 4-1. Just 5:47 later, Berra tallied his second of the game on assists from Jamieson and Alfred Johansson to make it 5-1 heading into the second intermission.
UWS scored the lone goal of the third period on Brandon Anderson's goal at the 14:55 mark for the game's final goal.
Marian goalie Mike Baldwin made 27 saves to pick up his third victory of the year, while Cory Simons took the loss for the 'Jackets after just 20 minutes of action. Zach Thompson came on in relief for the final 40 minutes and made 17 saves in the losing effort.
Marian will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, hosting UW-Stevens Point – ranked #8 in the USCHO.com poll and #5 in the D3Hockey.com rankings – at the Blue Line in a 4 p.m. start.
