Box Score SUPERIOR, Wis. (SabreAthletics.Com) - The Marian University women's hockey team went to Superior, Wis. tonight to take on UW-Superior in a non-conference event. A strong third period by the Yellow Jackets (8-4) blew the game wide open as they came away with a 7-2 victory dropping the Sabres to 3-7 on the season.
The Yellow Jackets were the first to strike midway through the first. A charging call on Kristin Skubic put Superior on the power play and it didn't take long for them to take advantage. Freshman Mikayla Goodin was fed an opportunity by teammates Maggie Cragg and Haley Olmstead leading to her fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Under a minute remaining in the first, Nina Laurie evened the game up at one with her seventh of the year, tying teammate Amanda Waigand for most on the team.
It didn't take long for the Yellow Jackets to regain momentum as captain Dani Schultz scored eight seconds into the period to go up 2-1. One more was added seven minutes later by Amanda Coey to give the Yellow Jackets a two goal lead going into the third.
Ali Glazer took the start in net for the Sabres fighting off an aggressive attack by the Yellow Jackets. 59 shots came her way on the night, a number that started to affect her in the third period.
Eight minutes in to the third, Yellow Jacket freshman Saige Patrick put the Sabres up by three. the goal was the first of four goals in five minutes for Superior as six Yellow Jackets scored on the night.
Despite the score the Sabres were still fighting until the end. With under two minutes remaining, Sarah Bier cut the Yellow Jacket lead to five to finalize the score at 7-2 with her third goal of the season.
The Sabres look to learn from the loss and come in with a fresh attack tomorrow when they take on the Yellow Jackets again. The puck drops at 1 pm.
