Sabres Let One Slip Away Against Yellowjackets

Box Score

SUPERIOR, Wis. (SabreAthletics.Com) - It was the second of two for the Marian University women's hockey team at UW-Superior today, December 13 2014, as the Sabres looked to even the series. The Sabres had control through the first two periods, but a third period surge of offense by the Yellowjackets led to an 8-7 victory to drop the Sabres to 3-8 on the season.

Penalties were the key to the Sabre's success, as 10 power play opportunities led to five goals for the Sabres. The Sabres allowed five penalties of their own, including a costly tripping call a minute into the third which led to the game winning goal by Superior.

Superior started the offense rite out of the gate when Hailey Adair scored her sixth goal of the season just over thirty second into the game to gain an early 1-0 lead, but it didn't last long.

A hooking penalty on Haley Olmstead three minutes later put the Sabres back in the game. Nina Laurie made the Yellowjackets pay, scoring her eighth goal of the season with help from Rian Lennon and Paige Johnson. Kaitlyn Johnson gave the Sabres a 2-1 lead six minutes later with the team's only goal against full strength. The scoring in the first continued as Amanda Waiagand tacked on one more for the Sabres in between Superior goals to end the first period tied at three.

After a quiet start to the second, a high sticking call on Superior's Lexie Weiss brought the Sabres back to life. Sarah Bier took advantage of the penalty as she scored her fourth goal of the season to put the Sabres back on top. Two goals by each side to end the period gave the Sabres a 6-5 with 20 minutes remaining.

The Yellowjackets came out strong to start the third, scoring three goals in the first three minutes to take a two goal lead. Paige Johnson started a Marian comeback with six minutes remaining but they were unable to capitalize as they fell 8-7.

After a few weeks of break for the holidays, the Sabres return to action on Friday, January 2, against Trinity College where they will look to start the New Year off rite. The puck drops at 7 pm.
