Sabres Fall to Foresters

Box Score

Fond du lac, Wis. (SabreAthletic.Com) - The Marian University women's hockey team played host to Lake Forest (5-3-1) tonight in an NCHA showdown. The aggressive offensive attack of the Foresters overpowered the Sabres as they were setback 6-1 to fall to 3-6 on the year.

The Sabres were successful moving the puck on the night, but it was a different story when it came to putting it in the net. Lake Forest outshot the Sabres 49-17 as they were continuously finding opportunities in front of the net, but were also able to capitalize on the shots.

Early in the first period Sabre goaltender Amanda Alexander was on her game, shutting down the multiple attacks, but a tripping call on Kaitlyn Johnson put the Foresters on the power play. With the man-advantage, Forester senior Erin Shamley broke the guard of Alexander to gain a 1-0 lead.

Less than a minute into the second period the Foresters added to their lead. Emily Wybo and Allie Girard started the attack, dishing it off to Laura Reckdenwald who shot one past the reach of Alexander. The Foresters added another midway through the second to go up by three.

The Foresters continued to make the Sabre defense work, once again coming out strong to start the third period. Sophomore Isabel Regine was able to dodge defenders and find her own lane to the net to score an unassisted goal two minutes in. Michelle Greeneway tacked on her second of the night about four minutes later to extend the lead to five.

The Sabres continued to plug away, battling for an opportunity to get on the board despite the odds of a comeback. They were able to finally get on the board with 13 minutes remaining in the game by a combination of Brittany Syms from Nina Laurie and Amanda Waigand. The Foresters answered with a goal of their own and finished the game at 6-1.

Penalties were a constant issue for the Sabres as they committed nine penalties on the night to continuously lose momentum. Lake Forest went on six power plays but were only able to score on one.

After nine days of rest, the Sabres will head out to Superior Wis. to start a stretch of four games on the road. They resume Friday night, December 12, at 7 p.m.
