Box Score ADRIAN, Mich. (SabreAthletics.com) – Hunter Stewart scored the game's first goal, but ninth-ranked Adrian College scored the next seven as the Marian University men's hockey team fell on the road, 7-2, this afternoon, Dec. 6.
Stewart's goal came just 35 seconds into the game and gave the Sabres (5-6-0, 2-6-0 NCHA) their first lead of the series. However, the Bulldogs (10-2-0, 8-0-0 NCHA) scored seven unanswered, including two before the end of the first period to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Holding a one goal lead, the Bulldogs gained a power play opportunity just 15 seconds into the second period and took advantage 15 seconds later on Kyle Brothers' ninth goal of the year.
Just before the 4-minute mark, Adrian made it 4-1 on Taylor McCloy's fourth goal of the season. Leading 5-1, Duston Hebebrand added to the misery with a short-handed tally at the 6:40 mark.
The Sabres prevented any further damage the final 13:20 of the second period, but the Bulldogs weren't finished nor was Hebebrand, who added his seventh goal of the year at the 7:08 mark of the third period.
Marian's Warren Carter tacked on his fourth goal this year 35 seconds later to provide bookend goals for Marian in the loss.
Despite the loss, the Sabres outshot the Bulldogs, 39-31, but special teams play was their downfall as Adrian went 3-for-8 on the power play and added a short-handed goal, while the Sabres finished 0-for-5 on the power play.
Marian will wrap up the first half of the season with a pair of challenging non-conference tests against state schools. It will play host to UW-Superior Friday night, Dec. 12, at 8 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. match-up with UW-Stevens Point Saturday, Dec. 13.
