Box Score MEQUON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - In an action-packed first period that saw all five goals scored, it would be the three unanswered tallies by Concordia Wis. that would prove to be enough, as they defeated Marian 3-2.
The last time these teams met, back in November, the Falcons used four unanswered goals spanning the first and second periods to claim a 5-2 victory. Three months ago, the season was young and most teams didn't know how the season would shake out. As fate would have it, in the second to last weekend of the season, Concordia Wis. and Marian are fighting for seeding, as both have clinched a playoff berth, but its the Falcons who held the upper-hand.
On Friday night, junior Amanda Waigand opened the scoring at the 6:00 mark of the first period. The lead would last for five minutes before the Falcons scored their first of three unanswered goals. Samantha Reiter converted on a feed from Jayda Hoerres to tie the game at one. Baylee Darling would follow suit, scoring four minutes later.
At 16:40, playing a man down, Brandi Muller scored short-handed for Concordia Wis., giving them a 3-1 lead. Before the opening frame finished, Waigand cut the lead to one with her power-play goal at 18:31.
The scoresheet would lay dormant for the following two periods as neither team could find twine. Sophomore Ali Glazer was perfect after the first, stopping all 28 shots she saw.
With the loss, Marian now trails Concordia Wis. by three points for fifth-place. The two squads will meet tomorrow at 4 p.m. to wrap-up their season series.
