Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - A hard fought game went the way of the Bulldogs on Friday, February 21 at the Blue Line as Adrian benefited from four-goal second period on their way to defeating Marian 7-3.
Adrian came out firing in the first period, peppering junior goaltender Amanda Alexander with 19 shots. The Sault Ste. Marie native stopped all but one, but the Adrian tally would be matched by junior Amanda Waigand, just a few minutes later.
Lauren Turner's goal at 15:09 of the first period appeared to give Adrian the upper-hand, but the Sabres countered quickly, scoring at 15:55. Freshman Lydia Cloud fed Amanda Waigand for her 15th goal of the season.
Heading into the second tied at one, Adrian broke the scoreless tie halfway through the period, as Kelsey Kusch converted on the man-advantage at 9:35. Twenty-four seconds later, Kaylyn Schroka scored an unassisted goal to give the Bulldogs a two-goal lead. The offense wouldn't stop there, as Bailey Robertson and Sydney Smith would score at 11:43 and 15:37 to give Adrian a 5-1 lead heading into the third period.
Failing to give in, Waigand tallied once again, this time at 1:01 of the third period. This time, Waigand took a slick feed from Nina Laurie to cut the Bulldogs lead to three. Adrian's four-goal lead would be reestablished at 9:34 on Devyn Fitzhenry's goal.
Hannah McGowan added her 13th goal of the year on the power play giving Adrian a 7-2 lead. With less than seven minutes remaining, Waigand completed her second hat-trick of the season, finishing off yet another feed into the slot by Laurie.
The loss drops Marian to 5-18-1 overall and 4-13-0 in the NCHA. They'll wrap-up their regular season tomorrow afternoon at the Blue Line against Lake Forest. The Class of 2014, consisting of Erin Dunphy, Sophie Schieldt, and Amanda Reimann, will be honored before the puckdrop as a part of the senior day festivities.
