Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - In Saturday's regular season finale, the Sabres were unable to overcome a trio of goals by Lake Forest's Michelle Greeneway, as they fell 3-2 on Senior Day at the Blue Line.
Prior to the puck drop, the seniors, consisting of Erin Dunphy, Sophie Schieldt, and Amanda Reimann, were honored as they played in their last home game at the Blue Line.
Both squads were held in check for most of the first period, with Lake Forest pelting sophomore goaltender Ali Glazer 14 times. With 32 seconds remaining, Michelle Greeneway bested Glazer to give Lake Forest the lead heading into the first intermission.
Halfway through the middle frame, Greeneway went hard to the net and was rewarded with her second goal of the game, with the assists going to Morgan Pope and Holly Lesperance. It wasn't too much longer before Lesperance completed the natural hat-trick, scoring at 13:02.
Trailing by three, the Sabres refused to go quietly and put their noses to the grindstone. Late in the second period, Alex Stansland was whistled for checking, handing Marian their third power play of the game. Junior Nina Laurie converted on the man-advantage to put the Sabres on the board late in the second period.
Marian cut the Lake Forest lead to just one at 10:54 of the third period on Amanda Waigand's 18th goal of the year. Laurie collected her 12th assist on the goal and wrote her name onto the scoresheet for the second time on the day.
Back-to-back Lake Forest penalties 13 seconds apart gave Marian a 5-on-3 advantage, trailing by one, but the Sabres were unable to capitalize.
Marian wraps up their regular season at 5-19-1 and 4-14-0 in the NCHA. They will travel to St. Norbert next week to play in the opening round of the Slaats Cup Playoffs. That game will be at the Cornerstone Community Center on Saturday, March 1st in De Pere, Wis. Puck drop is set for 5 p.m.
