Spartans Hand Sabres Pink Out Day Defeat

Box Score

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – A poor second half shooting performance doomed the Marian University women's basketball team as a 16-3 run by Aurora University to close out the game erased a three-point halftime deficit and propelled it to a 57-44 win inside Sadoff Gymnasium this afternoon, Feb. 8.

A Sarah Olewinski three-pointer gave the Sabres (5-17, 5-12 NACC) a 26-23 halftime advantage, but the Spartans (11-11, 10-7 NACC) answered by outscoring their counterpart 34-18 on the way to a double-digit win on the road.

Aurora's Anna Roszkowski scored a game-high 19 points and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds, including seven offensive, in leading her team to a win. Bethany Dorrington scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half to go along with 13 rebounds and Aurora out-rebounded Marian, 46-27.

The lone Sabre in double figures was senior Sarah Albert, who scored 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 1-for-3 from downtown and 6-for-8 from the free throw line.

Aurora jumped out to a 10-0 lead to begin the contest. Five of Shay Jenkins' 10 points came during the run, while Roszkowski provided the other five points. The Sabres would rebound nicely with a 13-3 run to close out the half.

In the second half, the Spartans regained the lead right away with a 5-0 run capped by a Dorrington three to give her team a 28-26 advantage with 17:41 remaining.

The Sabres would eventually tie the game at 41-41 on an Albert jumper with 5:51 left, but it was Dorrington once again to provide the answer as her three-pointer gave the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish.

Aurora closed out the game on a 16-3 run to win its third in the last four games and claim the regular season sweep of the Sabres.

Marian will look to get back on track Wednesday, Feb. 12, when it travels to Lakeland for a 7 p.m. start.
