Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (SabreAthletics.com) - Hoping to repeat their success from the last meeting, Marian wrapped up their weekend road trip at St. Scholastica on Saturday night. Three second period goals by the Saints led the way to a 5-1 win and gave St. Scholastica the advantage in the season series.
Coming off a 15 save performance on Friday night at Finlandia, junior goaltender Amanda Alexander kept things close in the first, turning away all 12 shots she saw. The Sabres managed to test Sheridan Friesen four times, but she too was solid, leaving the teams at a scoreless draw after 20 minutes.
Less than two minutes into the second period, Briana Stephens handed St. Scholastica their first lead of the night, completing the play started by Cara McMannis and Jana Henry. Freshman Paige Picard answered five minutes later, blasting her shot from the top of the zone to tie the game at one.
St. Scholastica defenseman Ivy Smith had her shot redirected right in front of Alexander by Nikki Logergren to regain the lead for the Saints. Fifty-four seconds later, Stephens added her second of the night to give St. Scholastica a 3-1 lead entering the third period.
Logergren put the game out of reach 63 seconds into the third period with her power-play goal. A fifth and final goal was added by Taylor Guzzo at 11:31 to seal the win for the Saints.
Marian will have an opportunity to improve their playoff seeding next weekend as they finish their season series with Concordia Wisconsin. The Falcons are winless in their last 11 games, dating back to January 4. In their first meeting this season, Concordia Wis. defeated Marian 5-2. Marian trails Concordia Wis. by a single point in the NCHA standings.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. next Friday night in Mequon, Wis. at the Ozaukee Ice Arena.
