Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE (SabreAthletics.com) – It was a frustrating day for the Marian University softball team as it dropped both games of a doubleheader by the narrowest of margins in each contest to host Wisconsin Lutheran College, 5-4 and 3-2, at Neumann Family Fields, this afternoon, April 19.
The Sabres (11-19, 7-7 NACC) led 4-3 going into the bottom of the seventh of game and allowed the Warriors (21-13, 11-5 NACC) to walk off after scoring twice with the winning run coming in on an error to end the game. In game two, Marian put the tying run on third base with a run in and a one out in the top of the seventh, but the game ended with three straight groundouts and the Sabres walked away empty handed.
Charlotte Pegram, Sara Terrian and Heather Dorn each led the Sabres at the dish with four hits apiece on the day. Dorn registered three of Marian's nine hits in game one.
The Warriors withstood seven errors in the opening game, leading to all four Sabre runs. Marian fell behind early, but answered back with two runs in the third to tie the game before eventually taking a 4-3 lead in the fourth.
In the bottom of the seventh, Dorn – who was also the starting pitcher – retired the first two batters via a strikeout and pop out to come within an out away of handing WLC a disappointing loss. However, the end result would be the exact opposite as the Warriors strung together three straight hits and scored the winning run on a throwing error.
In game two, WLC once again scored first on a bases-loaded walk in the first inning. After several scoreless frames, they took a 2-0 lead with a run in the fifth and added another in the sixth to take a 3-1 advantage.
The Sabres were able to scratch across a sixth-inning run, an unearned tally scored by Pegram who led off the inning with a single.
Down to their final at-bat, the Sabres put the first two runners on base with an error that allowed the speedy Lydia Cloud to reach, followed by a run-scoring double by Brie Hechimovich to give the Sabres an instant opportunity to tie the ball game.
Hechimovich would advance to third base in time for Marian's clean-up hitter, Terrian, to come to the plate. However, WLC starter Thomas would get her to ground out to end the threat.
The Warriors committed 10 errors defensively on the day, but the Sabres were unable to take enough of an advantage to pull out a victory. Thomas improved to 18-8 overall with victories in both games, while Dorn and Gorges took hard-luck defeats in both games, respectively.
The Sabres will enjoy the Easter holiday before returning to action Monday, April 21, for a noon start against visiting Edgewood College at Smith Field.
