Marian Softball Splits With Edgewood at Home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Defensive miscues in game two prevented the Marian University softball team from registering a doubleheader sweep over visiting Edgewood College, today, April 21, but a walk-off win in game one propelled the Sabres to a split, going away 4-3 before the Eagles tallied a 7-5 win in game two, at Smith Field.

Freshman Rachel Andres scored the game-winning run on Katie Landon's error as she overthrew first base on Sara Terrian's grounder to third. Marian (12-20, 8-8 NACC) was led by Amber Johnson and Emily Gorges, who both recorded 3-for-3 efforts in game one. Gorges tossed the complete-game victory as well, her sixth of the season.

Edgewood (16-17, 6-12 NACC) scored five unearned runs to register the 7-5 victory in the nightcap. The Eagles scored twice in the first to take an early lead and never looked back as Carlene DeCoster went 2-for-4 for the second time on the afternoon. Heather Dorn turned in a 4-for-4 day at the plate to lead the Sabres.

Marian trailed 1-0 in game one before Gorges drove home Johnson in the second inning of game one to tie the game. Johnson slapped a one-out double to left field, one of her three two-baggers on the day.

The Sabres would add single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings on RBI hits by Gorges and Johnson, respectively, to take a 3-1 advantage heading into the sixth inning. The Eagles would chip away with Jamie Diesch launching a no-doubter over the fence in left to lead off the sixth.

Edgewood then tied the game in the top of the seventh when a Landon groundout scored Unser, who led off the inning with a walk.

Andres led off the Marian seventh with a single to left. She would advance to second on a perfectly-placed sacrifice bunt by Charlotte Pegram before Terrian stepped to the plate. What ensued would be a routine play to third, but Landon overthrew her target and Andres kept running before crossing home plate for the winning run.

In game two, everything started poorly from the get-go for the Blue and White as Edgewood scored twice on two errors. The Eagles left two runners on as starter Heather Dorn got out of the jam by striking out the final two batters to prevent further damage.

The Sabres got both runs back, however, in the second. Three straight hits led to a tie game as Nikki Ponticelli and Brie Hechimovich recorded RBIs.

The Eagles would respond in the next half inning with three unearned runs on an error early in the frame. Heading into the bottom of the third, the Eagles led 5-2 and all five runs accounted for were unearned.

Marian would get one back in the bottom half on a Heather Dorn single, but the Eagles proved too much to overcome in earning the split.

Jackie Diesch picked up the win to move to 3-0 on the season, while Rachel DeJongh recorded the save after going three innings in relief.

Marian outhit Edgewood in both games, registering 21 hits combined, including 12 in game two. The Sabres also left nine runners on base in the nightcap, giving themselves chances despite the three fielding errors early in the game.

The Sabres will be back in action tomorrow, April 22, taking on Concordia University Wisconsin in another NACC doubleheader. First pitch in game one is slated for 3 p.m.
