Box Score 2 MAUSTON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – A pair of come-from-behind victories resulted in the first doubleheader sweep over Benedictine University since 2007 as the Marian University softball team won 6-5 in extra innings and 9-5 at Woodside Softball Complex, this afternoon, April 5.
The Sabres (7-13, 4-2 NACC) pulled into a three-way tie for third place in the league standings with the sweep today, their first sweep over Benedictine since April 28, 2007. Marian answered 5-1 and 5-0 deficits in games one and two, respectively, in an impressive display of resilience after forfeiting what was supposed to be two home games if not for poor field conditions at Smith Field in Fond du Lac.
Junior Amanda Cain's walk-off sacrifice fly in the ninth inning gave the Sabres a 6-5 victory in game one, after her team scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to force extras. In game two and trailing 5-0, Marian sent 13 batters to the plate and score nine unanswered runs to upset an Eagles (10-7, 4-2 NACC) squad that was unbeaten in league play entering the afternoon.
Cain finished the day tied with Sara Terrian with five hits each and three runs scored combined. Following her sacrifice fly to win game one, the Fisher, Ill. native registered three hits in game two, including two hits in the decisive eight-run fourth inning.
Freshman Charlotte Pegram turned in a 2-for-4 effort in game two with a bases-clearing triple in the eight-run fourth inning that put the Sabres ahead for good.
In the circle, sophomore Emily Gorges went all nine innings to record her third win of the season in game one. Freshman Heather Dorn followed that up with another complete-game effort and retired the final 14 batters she faced to close out the win.
Marian will be back in action tomorrow, April 6, to take on Aurora University (8-8, 2-0 NACC). Game one is set for 1 p.m. at Smith Field in Fond du Lac.
