Box Score 2 HOWARDS GROVE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – It's not easy winning on the road in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, but the Marian University softball team was able to make it happen by taking advantage of some Lakeland College miscues and swept the Muskies, 8-2 and 3-1, in a league doubleheader, this afternoon, April 9.
Sara Terrian was the engine offensively in game one, while pitching paced the Sabres (9-15, 6-4 NACC) at both ends of the sweep. Terrian went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs, including a fifth-inning home run that sent a message.
Emily Gorges (4-10) was nearly flawless in a complete-game effort, allowing two runs (1 earned) on four hits, while striking out six to dispatch the Muskies (10-12, 2-6 NACC) in game one. She then came on to close out game two, picking up her second save of the season after a stellar performance by Heather Dorn (5-5), who almost pitched a shutout.
Marian jumped out early in game one, scoring three times in the first two frames, taking advantage of six walks by Suares – who exited after just an inning and 2/3.
Leading 3-0 in the fourth, Terrian connected on an opposite field homer to make it 4-0. After allowed the Muskies to score in their half of the fifth, the Sabres put a four-spot on the board to put the game out of reach. Gorges helped her own cause in the rally with an RBI double to center field.
In game two, Marian spotted Dorn a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Gorges' patience at the plate got the Sabres on the board following a bases loaded walk. Amber Johnson then stepped up and singled home a run before an RBI groundout by Gabby D'Oronzo made it 3-0.
That was all Dorn and the Sabres would need, despite Yeager scoring after a lead-off double to cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the third.
In Dorn's victory over Benedictine last Saturday, she retired the last 14 batters she faced. Today, it was more of the same. She faced just four batters over the minimum from the third inning through the sixth before making way for Gorges to record the save in the seventh.
The Sabres will now look ahead to Saturday when they get set to host Concordia University Wisconsin at Smith Field. Game one of the doubleheader is slated to begin at noon.
