Sabres Squeak past Beloit in 2-1 OT Thriller

Box Score

The Marian University men's soccer team turned the heat on late to come from behind and beat Beloit College, 2-1, in double-overtime on opening day. Marian Junior Zach Peltonen had his way in the final minutes, breaking free from defenders and beating Beloit goalie BJ Kiser in the 103'.

"Javier Miranda gave me a great pass from out wide, I took it, beat a [defender] and the rest is history," Peltonen said after the game.

Despite the win, 27th-year Head Coach Craig Peltonen wasn't completely satisfied, especially early on after his team found itself trailing 1-0 at halftime.

As Peltonen put it after the game, "I wasn't pleased but we still have some young guys, we are still trying to figure things out, and I think we will get there."

The Buccaneers struck first, capitalizing on a penalty kick after the Sabres were whistled in the box. With a penalty kick given to Beloit, Phillip Amsden converted for his first goal of the season, giving the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead.

The Sabres didn't have much of an answer and were racking up fouls, ultimately doubling the Buccaneers by a 12-6 clip. However, Beloit put the Sabres back in the game with the most costly foul of them all.

After shutting down the Sabre offense for the first two-thirds of regulation, a red card was given to Spencer Moore on a rough tackle just outside the 18-yard box. With a man advantage, the Sabres picked up the tempo and garnered more scoring chances.

In the 75', the Sabres finally got on the board when Alfonso Fragoso found Jeroham Duran across the field to nab the lower left corner of the goal and tie the game at 1-1. And that's where it would stay until Peltonen's game-winner in double-overtime.

It marked the second straight 2-1 overtime win over Beloit in as many seasons and captured the first win on opening day for Marian since 2009. The Sabres look to continue their success on Saturday when they play host to Luther College. Game time is set for 5 p.m. at Smith Field.
